How to Keep Hummingbird Sugar Water Fresh
Cleaning your hummingbird feeder every few days prevents mold growth. Use warm water and a mild soap to wash all parts, and rinse thoroughly before refilling.
Replace the sugar water every 3-5 days to prevent it from spoiling. In hot weather, changing it more often keeps the water fresh and safe for hummingbirds.
Mix one part sugar with four parts water for the ideal balance. This concentration is closest to natural nectar and discourages mold growth.
Place feeders in shaded areas to keep them cool. Direct sunlight speeds up the fermentation process, which can lead to mold and spoilage.
Stick to plain white sugar for making nectar. Honey and artificial sweeteners can promote mold and are harmful to hummingbirds.
Check the feeder for signs of mold, such as black spots or cloudiness. Clean the feeder immediately if you notice any mold, as it can harm the birds.
If mold is a recurring problem, try using a smaller feeder. Smaller feeders hold less liquid, ensuring the sugar water is used up more quickly, reducing the chance of spoilage.
